There are 15 municipalities in Vest- Agder. Kristiansand, Mandal, Lyngdal, Farsund and Flekkefjord are urban municipalities. The other 10 are rural municipalities. Until 1964 when extensive council mergers took place, there were as many as 40 municipalities in the county. Kristiansand is the county town and the largest municipality in the county.
